When the same talking points come up during multiple client calls, I always make sure to share these insights on my blog and my LinkedIn. This week, I talked to multiple immigration lawyers about 2 specific but easy-to-implement ways to leverage their immigration lawyer LinkedIn presence.

Having a LinkedIn profile is a great start but if you’re really looking to establish yourself as a trusted immigration or global mobility professional and make connections with others in the field, you’re going to have to dive a bit deeper…

Here are my two foundation tips that immigration lawyers and other professionals need to use in order to build up their LinkedIn presence (and get what they want!)

Build your immigration lawyer LinkedIn presence by actively connecting with others

This first tip isn’t even about creating content  – it’s about becoming active on LinkedIn in a way that will help you build your brand with just a few minutes of effort each day. A great way to be active on LinkedIn without necessarily posting every day is by reacting to and commenting on new people’s posts, and then connecting with them!

You may be wondering ‘How do I start finding people? Do I have to essentially cold-call them?’

Yes and No. You will have to reach out to people you don’t know personally. I want you to know that I’m also not the biggest fan of cold-calling without a purpose behind it. I do think, however, that reaching out to someone you don’t know can work, if you do a bit of leg work beforehand.

Here’s my strategy for finding other immigration professionals that is a lot less stressful and more successful than cold-calling: go to the LinkedIn search bar (upper-left hand corner if you’re on a computer, top of your top of your “Home” screen if you’re on the mobile app), type in a keyword related to your work like, “immigration law” or use a relevant hashtag like, “#immigration” and scroll through the resulting feed.

You’ll probably see a number of comments by other people in your industry. Find one or a handful that are interesting to you and that you can comment on that were written by second or third connections (i.e. someone you are not already connected to), and like and comment on that post.

Then visit their profile ad send a connection request to – make sure to add a note! – telling them that you saw their post, found it interesting, and that you’d like to connect!

How easy is that?

My second piece of advice to build your immigration lawyer LinkedIn presence is to create long-form content on LinkedIn.

Publish articles directly on LinkedIn to build your immigration lawyer LinkedIn presence

LinkedIn has a great publication platform that allows you to write and publish blogs and articles (not just LinkedIn Posts) right ON the platform.

Every time that you publish an article or blog post on LinkedIn, the publication will not only be shared with your LinkedIn network but it will also be indexed on Google. This will help you establish your voice as a thought leader in your immigration or global mobility-related field AND it provides a great opening to connect and engage with like-minded professionals on the platform!

These publications are useful if you are looking to start publishing in journals or media outlets. You can also take these publications directly to journals and try to get them republished or you can use this as a way to leverage guest-writing opportunities. Use these LinkedIn publications as examples of your previous writing work to help your pitch.

Nervous about publishing? We all are when we start out! Don’t worry, it’ll get easier as you start practicing creating content regularly. I have a few tips for fighting off writer’s block and getting your work out there.
