Were You On An Immigration Industry Panel? Here’s How To Effectively Share It On LinkedIn

Just finished an immigration panel or global mobility talk? Congratulations! That’s an exciting career moment. Now you must be thinking about where and how to share your work.

First of all, I would strongly encourage any immigration or global mobility professional to share the immigration panel recording or any other recordings they have where they are sharing their expertise or professional advice. Having that kind of content out in the world can not only help establish yourself or your firm as a thought leader in the field, it can be a great networking aid too. If you have recordings of panels you’ve been on, it’s time to start posting them on LinkedIn!

But, I‘ve noticed that more immigration and global mobility folks are on panels these days and sharing these recordings on LinkedIn. That’s awesome, BUT if you want people to really engage with these posts, you can’t JUST share a link and say, “I was on a panel – go watch it!” because the reality is, they won’t.

The main reason is that clicking on a link and leaving LinkedIn’s main feed (same applies to other social platforms) is a commitment. It might seem trivial, but folks scrolling through LinkedIn are looking for quick bites of value, whether to learn something, celebrate someone, or to just laugh or otherwise get a bit of entertainment. So relatively speaking, if you’re asking them to click on something that will take them to a recording of your panel and watch it, you have to incentivize that behavior. Then, if you want your post to be seen by as many people as possible, you need to create some buss around it.

So, here are the two important things you should do to successfully share your immigration industry panel on social media.

First, outline what you discussed on the immigration panel

Create a framework for your immigration panel so that people listening can get an understanding of what you discussed. Having an outline or a framework of the panel gives your audience something that is easy to respond to and on LinkedIn, that means more comments.

The truth is that most people will most likely not watch your 40 minute-long video anyway, so if you’re willing to summarize your points, you’ll be able to catch a lot more people’s attention (and keep them paying attention!)

Think about the substance of your post and what takeaways or points that you would like your audience to engage with. This will help you create a framework that will get your recordings more than just LinkedIn ‘likes.’ After all, think about the difference between someone “liking” your post that simply says you spoke on a panel vs. a summary of it, which is the actual content you spoke about. Which of these options is more substantive?

Now that you know that your LinkedIn post about your panel should have a summary or at least some takeaways in it, remember to encourage engagement with your post too!

Second, encourage engagement on your post about your immigration panel

Don’t just drop the video and leave! Make sure that the content of your post is also designed to encourage authentic engagement with your audience. A simple way to do that is by asking a question within your post.

Do you have a question or some kind of ‘call to action’ in your post? For example, asking a question like “what other topics should I have covered?”, “what do you think about this topic?” or something that is equally genuine to get people to engage. And don’t just ask a question for the sake of asking – instead make sure that it is something that will add to the discussion. Otherwise, your question (and ultimately, your post and recording) will just seem like another social media sales pitch and that will hurt far more than it helps.

These two tips will help you actually deliver value to your network right away AND raise your profile’s awareness and with it your brand. And now that you will have all these new comments on your posts, be sure that you are responding to them as quickly and as thoughtfully as you can. Trust me, responding to these comments is going to drive even more engagement and expand your network.
